Effective Communication

"Communicating effectively helps group members build trust and respect, foster learning, and accomplish goals" (Franc Cyr, 2004, p. 1).

  • Give constructive feedback

  • Be clear and concise

  • Stay present

  • Develop trust

  • Be empathetic 

  • Ask open-ended questions

  • Avoid stereotyping

IMPORTANCE FOR INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES

  • It is crucial for instructional coaches to communicate effectively in order for meaningful relationships to be built.

  • In order for effective coaching to take place, trust must be formed between the coach & educator (Gross Cheilotes and Reilly, 2018).

TIPS FOR ACTIVE LISTENING

  • Pay attention to body language 

    • Yours and the speaker​

  • Summarize what the speaker has stated to show understanding

  • Avoid interupting the speaker

  • Maintain eye contact

  • Ask speaker whether or not they want your opinion
