Adult Learners/Andragogy

WHAT IS IT?

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO AN IC?

THINGS IC'S SHOULD CONSIDER

  • Andragogy is a concept created by Malcolm Knowles and refers to any form of adult learning.

  • Knowles (1984) created the 5 Asuumptions of Adult Learners

    • Self-Concept

    • Adult Learner Experience

    • Readiness to Learn

    • Orientation to Learning

    • Motivation to Learn

  • Adults learn differently than children

    •  The same strategies cannot be used for both.

  • Adult learners learn better through experiences.

    • IC's can help to facilitate these

  • What adults learn should quicky be able to be applied to real life.

    • Strategies in which IC's suggest to teachers should be those that are relevant to them

  • WGU (2020)

  • Adult learners need to know the reasoning behind why things are being taught.

  • Instruction should be task orientated.

  • Most adults want the things they are learning to be ideas that can be immediately applied to their life.

  • Adults should be included in the preparation and design of their learning.

  • Knowles (1984) (as cited by Pappas, 2013)
